Dr M Thirunavukarasu was born in 1952, in a small village called Sivadapuram in Tamil Nadu, India. He graduated in M.B.B.S, from Thanjavur Medical College, Thanjavur in 1974. He received his post-graduate training from Madras Medical College, Chennai, India with his D.P.M in 1979 and M.D.(Psychiatry) in 1981. He completed his Post-Doctoral training at Jewish Hospital attached to Washington University in St.Louis, Missouri, USA in 1988, whereby he had exposure in the recent advances in the Management of Alcoholism and Chemical Dependency and Sexual Medicine.
After post-graduation in 1981, he started working at Madras Medical College, Chennai (as it then was) at the Department of Psychiatry and served both at the Mental Hospital and at the General Hospital. Then he moved to Stanley Medical College, Chennai as Department Head and Professor of Psychiatry. He served two terms as Member of the Senate at the Tamil Nadu Dr MGR Medical University and served one term as Member of the Governing Council of the same prestigious university. He served two terms as President of Faculties of Medicine, as well. He has served as Examiner and Inspector for the discipline of Psychiatry at almost all of the institutions in India.
He has published, authored and edited five books for the students of Psychiatry. He has also published a lot of Books in Tamil language promoting awareness about mental health among the general population.
One of the books was awarded the “Best Book of the year for 1998” by the Government of Tamil Nadu. He has given more than 1000 appearances in the electronic and mass media, promoting mental health.
He has attended, participated and presented papers at National and International conferences. He has organized conferences of the Indian Psychiatric Society (IPS) at both the Regional and National level. He was the Organizing Secretary for three National Conferences. His services during the Tsunami Relief Operations in Sri Lanka were very much appreciated by World Health Organization (WHO).
He was the President of the Indian Psychiatric Society (IPS) during 2011 and from 2011 to 2014 he was the Board Member and Zonal Representative for Southern Asia of the World Psychiatric Association (WPA), Geneva.
His most recent calling until now has been as Head of the Department and Professor of Psychiatry in SRM Medical College and Research Centre attached to SRM University, Tamil Nadu.
